Detective Maria Santos of the Denver Police Department received the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's Distinguished Service Award for her leadership in a multi-state child rescue operation.

The investigation, which spanned six months and involved coordination with federal agencies and law enforcement in three states, led to the identification and rescue of three children from an abusive environment.

Detective Santos has served in Denver PD's Special Victims Unit for eight years and has been involved in over 200 cases involving crimes against children.

"Every child deserves someone fighting for them," Detective Santos said upon receiving the award.
